Course Summary:
This course will commence in September 2009, and is configured to those students of architecture who have already gained Part 1 exemption and who wish to study for the Part 2 examination through the subject of environment and energy within the context of architectural design. This programme, which concentrates on design and a wide range of current environmental issues, offers a unique combination of design and academic study with practical experience that will equip students with design experience and vocational skills that are becoming increasingly important. Buildings and the construction industry play an important role in environmental impact, the potential within the profession for environmental change is pivotal to the entire debate.
Teaching emphasis is placed on the integration of support studies with design proposals, examining the relationship between human beings, the environment and our responsibility towards it.
The programme comprises one double and seven single M level modules. The double module is compulsory and students study six out of the seven other modules. The programme is delivered by staff from UEL, CAT and specialist visitors from the architectural profession and other related fields and runs as a series of ten six-day residential events (consisting of Design Studies, Support Studies, lectures, seminars, presentations and practical workshops) the majority of which take place at CAT. There is a Study Tour in January and a Summer School in August, usually based in London, plus associated Design Projects.
The programme is divided into two parts:
- Design Studies, forming the core activity
- Support Studies, consisting of Environment and Energy Fundamentals, Building Technology in an Environmental Context, History and Theory of Architecture and Professional Studies.
All food and accommodation for CAT modules is provided within the surrounding area, offering a captivating and unique learning environment.
